Standards

worldwatcher.app Dam Incidents is a sourced record of failures, breaches, incidents, and watches at water-retaining structures worldwide.

What we include

Hydro and reservoir dams, irrigation and water-supply dams, tailings and mine-waste dams, levees and dykes, weirs, barrages, sluices, spillways, crest gates, and canal banks when a structure fails or is at risk. Ordinary river flooding with no structure is out of scope.

How a record is made

• Facts come from reputable outlets or official sources. Unconfirmed social posts stay out until one of those backs them.
• Unknown numbers, names, and coordinates stay empty. We do not invent them.
• Causes are classified only from sourced facts, using a fixed vocabulary (overtopping, piping, earthquake, operational gate, and so on).
• A pin is marked uncertain when the point is a town or district centroid, not a sourced dam site.

Categories

Failure, partial breach, incident, and watch. Controlled releases are stored but are not a public category chip.

Corrections

The public site cannot edit the database. Use Report a correction on an incident. Reports are reviewed before any change.
